Cavemen dug pigments from the earth – dirt, clay, charcoal, flower petals and vegetable dyes mixed with saliva or animal fat to paint on the walls of caves. Later it was discovered that colors that came from oxides, deposits and minerals of the earth were more permanent and would not fade over time. Throughout the Renaissance, mineral pigments continued to be used by painters. Over the years artists have traveled far and wide in search of rare natural pigments to create beautiful works of art. Today, synthesized pigments are used extensively in the manufacturing of artistic grade paints.
